Anti-Mainstream Gear

Lately I have been somewhat obsessing over clearing out my closet. After looking through there twice now I have discovered items I have outgrown taking up major space! I mean that I have outgrown in two ways:

1. I have literally outgrown some items to the point physically where they do not fit or fit very well.
2. I have mentally outgrown some items and they seem to not fit who I am or who I am turning into.

The last blog when I was at Clothes Mentor selling old gear, some of the clothes were not taken on account of them being “too juvenile”. The clothes did not fit the scope of the Clothes Mentor world; which is fine. I am just realizing as well, they no longer fit the scope of my closet either because that really isn’t very “me” anymore.

I have been looking for more than just wearing clothes and never repeating the same outfit (which literally is a talent I have mastered). I find myself really focusing on texture and quality rather than quantity and trend like I had in the past. Every time I go shopping now, it’s like I am looking for something more of an investment, something that I know I can add to or subtract from and it still looks amazing. I also find myself looking for interesting details or patterns, items that are somewhat irregular.

Really what is happening is I am going anti-mainstream. I no longer want to have what everyone else has or wear what everyone else is wearing. I want to be so different and unique so that I stand out the way I should. I find myself wanting to wear items that have a story or tell a story, that have a meaning. Old closet probably had a few key pieces that had a great story, new closet is striving for the majority to hold an interesting story and be a piece to talk about or focus on.

This is random, but when I traveled over seas to China we got to go to this jewelry store which specialized in pearls. Everyone was picking out the perfectly round pearl necklaces, earrings, etc. but not me. I just couldn’t seem to hop on the band wagon with the way pearls are supposed to be. Well one ring caught my attention. The jeweler said it was an irregular shaped pearl and that it was quite unique. I ended up buying it. I loved how it looked. So strange and against the grain, but still beautiful. That is how I have been feeling about my clothes. I don’t plan to look weird, just more different and less predictable.

I encourage my fellow Spring Cleaners to get out there and find your own unique niche. Think about it as you are cleaning your closets and looking to replace some of that old gear. Let it be special to you and make you smile. It will also give you a great story to tell your neighbor I am sure :). Happy Shopping! KG
